Definition

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising is a performance-based digital marketing model in which advertisers pay only when a user clicks their ad. Unlike organic search, PPC delivers immediate visibility at the top of search results — and when managed correctly, every pound spent returns measurable, trackable revenue.

PPC encompasses paid search campaigns across Google Ads and Microsoft Ads, Shopping campaigns for e-commerce, Display and YouTube advertising for brand awareness, and Remarketing to re-engage visitors who did not convert. The defining characteristic of well-managed PPC is not the volume of clicks generated — it is the quality of conversions delivered and the return on every pound of ad spend. Most PPC campaigns fail not because the platform doesn't work, but because they are optimised for the wrong metric: clicks instead of revenue.

01
We're spending thousands but seeing no return on ad spend

High spend with low ROAS is the most common PPC problem. It happens when campaigns are optimised for clicks — not conversions. Traffic without intent costs money without results. The platform works. The strategy doesn't.

02
Our PPC agency set up the campaigns and never touched them again

PPC campaigns left unmanaged bleed budget. Without weekly bid adjustments, negative keyword refinement and A/B testing, costs rise and quality scores drop — every single month. Management is not setup. Management is ongoing.

03
We get clicks but nobody buys, books or fills in the contact form

Clicks without conversions mean one of two things: wrong audience targeting or a landing page that kills intent on arrival. Most agencies fix the ad. We fix the full funnel — from keyword to conversion.

04
We have no idea whether our Google Ads are actually working

If your reporting shows clicks and impressions but not revenue, you're flying blind. Without proper conversion tracking and attribution, every optimisation decision is guesswork — expensive, compounding guesswork.

05
Our cost-per-click keeps rising every month with no improvement

Rising CPCs with no conversion improvement is a death spiral caused by poor Quality Scores, irrelevant keywords and lazy bidding strategy. The solution is tighter targeting and better ad relevance — not increasing the budget.

06
Our competitors outrank us on Google Ads despite smaller budgets

Ad position is determined by Ad Rank — Bid × Quality Score. A competitor with half your budget consistently outranks you if their ads, keywords and landing pages are better aligned. We increase your Quality Score so you win position without overpaying.

Recognise any of these? A free PPC audit will show you exactly where your budget is going — and what to fix first.

Week 1
Account Audit & Competitor Analysis

We tear apart your existing campaigns — or build the intelligence to launch new ones. Every keyword scored, every bid strategy examined, every competitor's ad mapped. Before we spend a penny, we know exactly where yours is going and where theirs is winning.

Tracking, Attribution & Launch

We set up full conversion tracking before a single ad goes live. Every lead, purchase, call and form submission tracked from click to outcome. Then we launch — with ad copy, extensions and landing pages all optimised for Quality Score from day one.

FAQ

Pay-per-click questions answered

How much does PPC management cost?
Our PPC management fees start from £800/month, with a recommended minimum ad budget of £1,500/month paid directly to Google. The management fee covers all strategy, setup, weekly optimisation and reporting. Your ad budget is billed directly to your Google Ads account — we never take a percentage of what you spend on ads. There is a one-off setup fee of £400, which is waived on a three-month commitment.
How long does it take to see results from Google Ads?
Unlike SEO, PPC can deliver results from day one. Ads go live as soon as campaigns are set up and approved by Google, which typically takes 24–48 hours. That said, the first 2–4 weeks are a learning period — Google's algorithm optimises delivery as conversion data accumulates. Most accounts see meaningful improvement in cost-per-acquisition by weeks 4–6, with compounding gains as Quality Scores improve over subsequent months.
What is a good ROAS for Google Ads?
A good ROAS depends on your margins, but the Google industry average across all sectors is around 4:1 — £4 returned for every £1 spent. E-commerce typically targets 4:1 to 8:1 depending on product margins. Service businesses measure cost-per-lead rather than ROAS. We agree target KPIs with you before launch — so you know what success looks like before we spend a penny.
What is the difference between PPC and SEO?
PPC delivers immediate visibility at the top of search results — you pay per click and results start the day campaigns go live. SEO builds organic rankings over months and compounds over time — no cost per click, but slower to start. PPC is ideal for immediate lead generation, new product launches and competitive markets. SEO is ideal for long-term compounding growth. The most effective strategies use both: PPC while SEO builds authority, then SEO maintaining visibility as PPC scales.
Do I need a minimum budget for Google Ads?
Google has no official minimum budget, but we recommend a minimum of £1,500/month in ad spend to generate enough data for meaningful optimisation. Below this threshold, the learning period takes longer, and results are harder to scale. For competitive sectors such as legal, finance or healthcare, we recommend a higher starting budget — we'll advise the right level during your free audit based on your keywords and market.
What is Quality Score and why does it matter?
Quality Score is Google's rating (1–10) of the relevance of your keyword, ad copy and landing page. A higher Quality Score means lower cost-per-click and better ad position — a competitor with half your budget can consistently outrank you with a better Quality Score. Improving Quality Scores is one of the highest-leverage activities in PPC management, and one that most set-and-forget agencies completely ignore.
What is Performance Max and should I use it?
Performance Max is Google's AI-powered campaign type that serves ads across all Google channels — Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Gmail and Maps — from a single campaign. It delivers on average 12% more conversions than standard Search campaigns when set up correctly. The caveat: it requires quality creative assets, proper conversion tracking and careful audience signals. Without these in place, it burns budget inefficiently. We include Performance Max in our Growth and Scale plans.
How is BAMS Digital different from other PPC agencies?
Three things set us apart. First, revenue-first management — every decision is tied to your bottom line, not your click-through rate. Second, zero markup on ad spend — your budget goes directly to Google, we never take a percentage. Third, one specialist per account — John manages your campaigns personally, with weekly optimisation and monthly revenue reporting included as standard. No handoffs, no juniors, no black boxes.
